We met at a tri-stake youth conference for our church in
July of 2007 (which neither of us had planned on attending until we each
decided at the very last possible moment, that we should go after all). I was
17 about to start my senior year of high school; he was 18 and headed for
college.
We were doing a “getting to know you” activity where we had
to walk around with a little booklet full of different statements or “facts”
and get different people to sign their names underneath one or two that applied
to them (things like “I am the youngest child in my family” or “I’ve traveled
out of the country” etc. etc.)
I distinctly remember this moment like it was yesterday, and
every time I think about it my heart starts to beat just as fast as it did way
back then…
I was standing in a circle of people, talking to them,
getting them to sign my book, when I received a tap on my shoulder. I turned
around only to see the most glorious being I’d ever laid eyes on…This tall,
tan, hunk of a guy with piercing blue eyes, and sun-kissed golden hair. He was
magnificent. My knees literally went weak (something I’d only ever read about
or heard people describe in movies…and never actually experienced myself in all
my time of meeting guys and dating, etc.) and I felt like I was going to
collapse. I couldn’t breathe, and almost didn’t even manage to speak when he’d
asked me a question.
For the sake of this post, I won’t include every little
detail of that youth conference (if you really wanna know what happened over
the next few days…I’ll gladly tell you lol…such as the fact that upon our first
actual conversation, we were so comfortable with each other that we’d felt like
we’d already known each other forever)…Basically, after those 3 days at youth
conference, I went home feeling like I’d met someone to be a standard that I
needed to hold the future guys I’d date….Little did I know that I’d actually
met my eternal companion!!
